Room 8 Burns Bulletin Term 4 Week 5
Week Four in Room 8 was another busy week with term four absolutely flying by. The Racist Rashes won almost every single award in Room 8 this week after having a very slow start they came right inn the end. Social dancing continued with
This week in Room 8 social dancing will continue on for our year eight students in preparation for their end of year leavers dance. On Monday and Wednesday block three the school will have it’s athletics afternoon’s with a lot of Mohaka and Room 8 members making finals. Sexuality education also starts this week. I am sure lots of students are interested and have many questions that they want to ask and have answered.
Standards Day took place in week four with Mohaka putting in a very good showing and hopefully when we find out the final results later on in the week it will be a win for Mohaka.
On Thursday afternoon there will be a Burns-Martin Trophy Challenge. Can Room 8 turn seven wins into eight wins? Or will Room 4 finally be able to get back the Burns-Martin Trophy for the first time since May this year in term two. We have six wins in a row let’s make it seven Room 8.
The awards in Room 8 for week 4 are as follows:
Drum: The Racist Rashes
Shield: The Racist Rashes
Belt: Jeremy (The Racist Rashes)
Wings: Christine (Kumquats)
People’s Choice Award: Jenna (The Racist Rashes).
Week five will see the start of our sexuality education programme which will be very interesting to see what the members of Room 8 already know and so we can learn about this together as a class. Week five also has the start of testing to take place in preparation for our year seven’s to become year eight’s at T.I.S and our year eight’s to head on to high school.

Week Four Term Four Group Champions
Week Four Term Four Group Champions The Racist Rashes
In week four the lead changed a lot with the winning group trailling all week until the final day. The Racist Rashes won almost every award that Room 8 has to offer on the final day of the week which just goes to show that being steady through out the week generally is the way to win but not always.
Social Dancing
Some members of Room 8 performing dancing earlier on in the year.
Social Dancing has started for the year eight students and they are having a blast learning the different types of dances. The boy's in Room 8 have really got on board and have even come back to class after the dancing lessons and shown some of our fellow year seven students what they have learnt.
The theme for the year eight leavers dance is undecided at this stage but I am sure whatever it is the year eight's will have a memorable evening when it does take place on the final days of the year in December.

Movember Day 5
Room 8 Debates
Room 8 and their debates!
This week Room 8 have been completing debates. The topics that have been argued in the affirmative and negative are as follows:
- Boys and Girls should be educated seperately.
- Television is a waste of time.
- Homer Simpson is the perfect male.
- Going to school should be voluntary.
- Skateboarding on footpaths should be made legal.
Room 8 have shown the great skills that have been learnt in relation to debating and all been able to talk well about thier topics.
Talking in Room 8 is something that we try to promote and are generally very good at doing.
The class has learnt a lot about the format of how a debate starts, rebuttal and the different terminology used. The rebuttal has shown that everyone in Room 8 pays attention to what each other say, are able to give feedback and enjoy watching each other performing their debates.
Standards Day
Mohaka Members before Standards Day.
On Wednesday the 4th of November was the Taradale Intermediate Standards Day. What Standards Day is is an athletics event where all of the students at Taradale Intermediate participate in athletics event.
The events were:
- Discus
- Shot Putt
- 100 meters sprints
- High Jump
- Long Jump
If the individuals got a 4 score then they went through to the finals of that event on the following Monday and Wednesday afternoons. There were a lot of Mohaka Members getting these which was pleasing to see.
The final results have not been added up yet but looks like it will be a very close finish and hopefully it will be a win to Mohaka!
Stay tuned!

Burns-Bulletin Week Four Term Four
Room 8 Burns Bulletin Term 4 Week 4
Week Three in Room 8 saw Room 8 have another exciting week in the way of classroom challenges. The drum challenge was very entertaining and the shield again came down to the wire with Nuclear Fusion winning both the shield and the drum.
Our Room 8 debates will take place over this week with huge interest from the students as to how they will go and how their peers will be able to argue the cases that they have been researching. Mr. Burns in particular is looking forward to see how well Room 8 can talk when it is in relation to a specific topic.
Standards Day is this week on Wednesday blocks 2 and 3. Mohaka has a lot of potential in the area of athletics. I hope that everyone shows up on the day and throws, runs or jumps their way to a personal best or a 4 score for themselves and Mohaka.
The Palmerston North Cultural Exchange was a huge success over the course of Thursday and Friday with some very good performances from members of Room 8. Great to see Taradale Intermediate welcome over visitors from Palmerston North.
The awards in Room 8 for week 3 are as follows:
Drum: Nuclear Fusion
Shield: Nuclear Fusion
Belt: Tomas (Kumquats )
Wings: Jenna (The Racist Rashes)
People’s Choice Award: Jake (Kumquats).
Week four will see the start of the Social Dancing programme for our year 8 students. I know that there are a few nervous students out there about this but as long as you give it a go then you can say at the end of it all that you at least tried. I think you will be surprised at how you find it and how much fun you actually have while learning about social dancing.

Room 8 Burns Bulletin Term 4 Week 3
Week Two in Room 8 saw a turn around with the groups that were leading in the group points situation. Nuclear Fusion and The Racist Rashes were the front runners all week and they ended up battling it out right down to the final bell at the end of the week. Nuclear Fusion took out the shield which is now getting very close to see who will win the overall year champion for this.
Inquiry and debating in Room 8 for Term Four has started and their has been a lot of interest in both. Debating is something that is new to those of you who have not done it before and I hope that you are able to pick up some skills that you can use in the future. The inquiry we are looking at participating in this term deals with the use of the media and news. Room 8 is hoping to get on to Taravision in Week’s 8 and 9 of this term.
The Palmerston North Cultural Exchange is at school this Thursday and Friday with people taking billets and some performances by both groups on Friday morning which will be great to see.

Burns-Martin Trophy
Room 8 with the Burns-Martin Trophy once again!
On Thursday afternoon the epic set of contests that are and is the Burns-Martin Trophy continued. Room 4 challenged Room 8 to a game of non-stop cricket this time around. It started off quite close with Room 4 setting a competitive 46 in their classes at bat.
After an indifferent start from Room 8 they cleaned up once again by getting 77 runs in their first innings. There was only enough time for one innings and this time around for the record setting 6th time in a row Room 8 won and put the overall record at 7-3 in favour of Room 8.
Yeah Room 8 Good Job!
Week Two Term Four Group Champions

In a short week of only 4 days it was really a two horse race as they say. Nuclear Fusion and The Racist Rashes lead the group standings for most of the week. It came down to a nail bitting last second quiz question that saw Nuclear Fusion take out the title for the first time this term.

The week ended with the Jelly Belliez and Gigitty Gigitty Goo trying to figure out the puzzler for the day to decide the winner. As time ticked down and the bell rang the Jelly Belliez won by just 100 points.

Week Three Term Three Group Champions
Week Three Term Three Group Champions The Tectonic Monkeys
In a week that saw a lot of success at Taradale Intermediate and in Room 8 there was also a fair share of upsets. With Hawkes Bay creating history with their biggest win ever against Auckland over the weekend Room 8 was about to have some history made.
Not since week six of term two has an all boy group won the shield in Room 8 and with the Tectonic Monkeys taking an upset lead at the start of the week three I did not think anything of it at that point in time.
Slowly as the week unfolded The Tectonic Monkeys stayed on the top of the group standings by always, no more then one or two hundred points, being on top. As friday afternoon came about they were in the lead by 400 points and an all boy group was about to upset the dominance of the girl groups in Room 8.
The week three champions for term three are The Tectonic Monkeys.
No lets see if you can hold onto that shield boys!
Kia Kaha Plays
Room 8 Performing Some Plays to do with Kia Kaha
In week three, Room 8 where given some time as a part of their literacy taskboard to do a follow up activity on the stories that they had been reading. This was done in the form of a play.
Each group were told to write the scripts, make sure that every group member had something to do and say that could show an example of bullying and how to do with that scenario or situation.
Some great humour was shown in these plays which is actually quite a good strategy when dealing with bullying if you have to try and defuse the situation.
A great effort by all groups.
Well Done Room 8!
Super Six
2009 Super Six Soccer Champions, "Taradale Intermediate."
In week three Taradale Intermediate sent their girls and boys soccer teams to Marewa Park to participate in the 2009 Super Six Soccer Tournament. It was a very cold day and Mr. Burns and Mr. and Mrs. Shakeshaft had to try and keep warm in the cold conditions.
The day started out slow for the boys with two draws in their first two games but then won the next three. The girls team hit the ground running win their first four games and drawing the last one.
Both the boys and girls teams won their divisions with the girls being the most successful team on the day with four wins and one draw. The boys team ended the day with three wins and two draws and had scored the most goals out of any team to have the best for and against record for the tournament.
A very proud day for Mr. Burns and Mr. and Mrs. Shakeshaft. A great success for Taradale Intermediate being able to bring back the Super Six Shield back to school for the first time in 2009.
Week Two Term Three Group Champions
Week Two Term Three Group Champions Fxataow
In week two of term three Fxataow lead the week from start to finish. This just goes to show that if you are paying attention, on task and organised then you can win the shield. Fxataow dominated this week and look to be set for a good term with a few wins coming their way from what has been seen this week.
Well Done Fxataow!
Y.M.C.A
Mohaka Dancing to Y.M.C.A
In the first Mohaka Assembly of term three Room 8 was asked to help out with the music. Room 8 thought that it would be a good idea to have a song with some actios that were easy to follow for a song that Mohaka would also know.
So for a laugh we thought that we would do the Y.M.C.A song and come up with some actions for Mohaka to dance to. After a little bit of hesitation and some practice at lunch time some girls came up with some basic actions to teach Mohaka.
That is not were it ends though. Mr. Burns decided that it would be a good idea to join in and there is a funny video in room 8 now of Mr. Burns dancing to this! lol.
A lot of fun was had doing the dancing of the Y.M.C.A.
Week One Term Three Champions
Week One Term Three Group Champions
Week one of term three saw all new groups with the names of:
- Guilty
- Tectonic Monkeys
- Gigitty Gigitty Goo
- Spoxy Much
- Fxataow
- Jellly Belliez
The week started off with a big lead seen by Fxataow and Spoxy Much and it came down to the last minute on Friday to decide the winners. The winners ended up being Spoxy Much and with that win it saw a few girls in the group start to close in on our overall leader for the year who is a boy!
Matheletics
A member of Room 8 at the Taradale Intermediate Matheletics
During week two of term three at Taradale Intermediate the school matheletics took place. We had a memeber of Room 8 participate in this which was good to see. The evening had the teams that would be representing Taradale Intermediate at the up coming Hawkes Bay Matheletics Competition vs some parent teams.
The age old question of are you smarter then a 10, 11 or 12 year old was about to be answered. The funny thing is that the students had the best overall team but in the sense of parents vs students the parents won the overall title.
A great night had by all!
Italian Style Lunch
Room 8 and their Italian style lunch on the last day of Term Two
To tie in with Room 8 doing Italian as their language over the course of term two they decided to have an Italian themed lunch. There was a wide variety of food from pasta, desserts, lasagne and of course pizza.
It was good to see the students respond well to having such a lunch in Room 8 and we will definetly be having another lunch at the end of term three.

Week Nine and Ten Group Champions
Week Nine and Ten Champions The Dorks
The final two weeks of the term were combined and the group that won was going to be awarded with a subway voucher each. The competition was very strong through out the two weeks. But in the end The Dorks were the winners of the vouchers and something to spend on their holidays.

Week Eight Group Champions
The Dorks Week 8 Group Champions
Week eight for the Room 8 Weekly Champions Sheild saw every group lead for the first time in quite a while. The Fast and the Furious lead into Friday with the Tree Stumps, T.M.N.T and The Dorks closely followed.
The Dorks had a very successful day on Friday getting the points the from the class quiz and the Leaning Tower of Pisa challenge also. The Dorks are Room 8's first ever grand slam champions this is because they have the class shield, drum and tiara.
Way to go you Dorks!
Catapults
Room 8 making Catapults
During the week Room 8 was given the chance to create catapults as a part of their science/technology build up.
The class was grouped into threes and fours and where given a set amount of equipment to make catapults. They were given:
- Black A2 paper
- 1 meter of cellotape
- Scissors
- Blu Tac
- Pins
- Straws
- Rubber Bands.
There were some very interesting designs created and some of our catapults were very successful and others were not so successful.
A lot of new skills and ideas about catapults were learnt. We has a wrap up chat about how this could relate back to our inquiry questions of "How would life be different if?" We decided that a catapult could help us to get place in a short distance quickly or over something that we could not jump on our own.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
Tree Stumps with their "Leaning Tower of Pisa."
On Friday in Room 8 the class took place in another science/technology challenge, with this one being titled the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The class got into groups of three and four and were given:
- 1 meter of masking tape
- 20 spaghetti sticks
- 4 bbq sticks
- A line of egg carton
- Some blu tac.
With this the class was given ten minutes to plan what it was they were going to design and how they would go about doing it. They then would get the equipment needed and have 30 minutes to complete the task.
They would then be judged on height and a story that they have come up with for their towers name, in Italian to realte back to our international language which is Italian.
A lot of fun was had doing this and I also believe some spaghetti eaten at the end too!
Ilminster Sports Exchange
Ilminster Sports Exchange Boys Soccer
On Friday of week seven this term Tardale Intermediate had their annual sports exchange with Ilminster Intermediate from Gisborne. Up in Gisborne Taradale Intermedaite did not achieve much success unfortunately.
Here at home, Taradale Intermediate, the competition was much closer and very exciting to watch. The Boys under 45 kg rugby team went down 30-10 on Thursday afternoon with the girls soccer team also playing at the same time gaining a 1-0 win.
With three contests on Friday morning the tie was locked up at 1-1. The table tennis was won by Ilminster 10-2 which put them into a 2-1 lead for the tie and within just one win of gaining their first ever win here at Taradale Intermediate.
The boys soccer was up next and a titanic battle took place it was one of the contests of the whole sports exchange. Taradale Intermediate boys won 1-0 after a very competitive match with both teams having chnace to take the win.
That left the tie 2-2 with the hockey being the decider. The score at half time was 0-0. just after half time Taradale Intermediate scored which put them into the lead 1-0 for the matahc and would see them win the tie 3-2. But with 10 minutes to play Ilminster scored to make it 1-1. The match ended a 1-1 draw which meant that the tie here at Taradale Intermediate was a draw and that Taradale Intermediate would hang on to thier trophy for here at home and not lose it for the first time.
A great time was had by all and congratulations to all people who helped out and took part in this great event.

Week Seven Champions
Week Seven Group Champions
With the second week of the new groups up and running could the dominate week that T.M.N.T had last week turn into back to back titles?
It seemed that this could be the case at the start of the week. However, The Fast and the Furious came chrging to the lead part way through Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon T.M.N.T had dropped of the pace and it was a two horse race between The Fast and the Furious and the No Names.
An interesting bit of information was realised during the week aswell. Where the No Names are currently sitting no group has every won the group shield there in almost half a year.
Unfortunately this week would not change that either as the Fast and the Furious would hang on and collect their second title this week.
Well Done Fast and the Furious!
Flying Eggs
This is what happens when eggs don't fly!
This week as a part of our space inquiry and a bit of a lead into the technology challenge, that will take place at Taradale Intermediate in Term 2, Room's 8 and 9 tried to make eggs fly!
The challenge was to make eggs fly with out them breaking. The class was put into groups of three and four and only had this list of equipment:
- 1 meter of string
- 1 meter of tape
- 5 cotton buds
- Some scissors
- A piece of A2 paper
Some very different designs were made by the groups and when we tested for the first time we found out that the cotton buds played a big part in keeping the eggs safe and not broken. So, for our variable to be changed and making the test harder the second time around the groups had to change something to their flying egg devices and have not cotton bud in them either.
The students had lots of fun doing this and learnt about how re-entry into earth works if you are coming back from outer space.
